What is HGV Insurance?
HGV Insurance is a crucial safeguard for businesses operating heavy goods vehicles in the transport industry. This specialised coverage goes beyond standard auto insurance, addressing the unique risks associated with large commercial trucks. From articulated lorries to tipper trucks, HGV Insurance protects against potential financial losses stemming from accidents, theft, or cargo damage.
Operators must carefully consider factors such as vehicle value, payload type, and route frequency when selecting an appropriate policy. Many insurers offer tailored packages that include public liability, goods-in-transit, and breakdown cover. The ever-evolving landscape of road regulations and environmental concerns also influences HGV Insurance, with some policies now incorporating green initiatives and telematics to promote safer driving habits. As the logistics sector continues to grow, competition among insurance providers has intensified, potentially benefiting fleet managers through more competitive premiums and innovative coverage options.
However, the complex nature of HGV operations demands a thorough understanding of policy terms and exclusions to ensure adequate protection. Ultimately, comprehensive HGV Insurance not only fulfils legal requirements but also provides peace of mind for businesses navigating the challenging world of commercial transportation.

Why you need HGV insurance
HGVs involve risks that standard motor policies can’t cover. By law, every HGV over 3.5 tonnes must have HGV insurance, which protects you against legal liability if an accident causes injury or damage to other people or property. Specialist HGV policies cover vehicle damage, cargo and fleet protection.

Does Nova Insurance Offer Comprehensive HGV insurance.
The simple answer is yes, we do offer comprehensive HGV insurance.
As the name suggests, comprehensive HGV insurance policies provide additional cover. Over and above fire, theft and damage to other vehicles and property, your comprehensive HGV insurance policy will cover you for the repair of your vehicle. Also included are any towing costs, return of your HGV after it has been stolen, changing locks and replacing keys. For an additional nominal fee, we can also include public liability protection, breakdown cover, hazardous goods cover, European driving cover, and legal expenses cover. You may also specify cover for any trailers, even when they are not attached to your HGV and are stored in your depot.
Does Nova Insurance Offer Third-Party HGV Insurance?

What does my HGV insurance policy cover?
Nova Insurance fully understand that you depend on your HGV for your livelihood and, as such, our policies cover this as far as possible. We offer two kinds of HGV insurance: third-party, fire and theft and, comprehensive.
How much can i expect to pay for my HGV Insurance?
As with all types of insurance, the amount you pay for your HGV insurance will depend on a variety of factors.
The easiest way to determine your HGV insurance premium is to visit our website and get a quick quote. Your HGV insurance premium will be influenced by how often your vehicle is outside the UK, the type of business it operates in, and whether it has a telematics device. If your HGV is usually parked in a secure facility when not on the road, this can help to reduce your premium. Other excellent ways to reduce your HGV insurance premium include obtaining an advanced driver qualification and increasing your voluntary excess.
Can you insure vehicles heavier than 44 tonnes?
Yes, regardless of how heavy your lorry is, we can find you an HGV broker that covers it and more.
What exactly does HGV insurance protect?
HGV insurance is designed for HGVs, also known as Large Goods Vehicles. This type of insurance is similar to van insurance in many ways; it covers damage caused by the vehicle to others and can be scaled up to cover accidental damage to the truck and theft cover. In addition, you can purchase goods-in-transit insurance to cover the contents of the vehicle.
Can you provide cover for hazardous goods or locations?
At Nova Insurance, we work with a variety of insurers who may be able to offer you a suitable level of cover, including carriage of hazardous goods or coverage for visiting hazardous sites.
Do I need an operators’ licence to operate as a haulier or goods vehicle operator?
You will need an operator’s licence to carry goods connected with any business or trade if your vehicle is over 3.5 tonnes; certain exemptions apply. For further information on exemptions, visit the Gov.uk website here.
Will my haulage insurance policy restrict the use of my vehicle?
Most heavy goods vehicles are used solely for haulage or delivery purposes, but we understand that not everyone’s requirements are the same. Nova Insurance will search a panel of insurers and underwriters to find you the most competitive premium based on your use, and can often include the vehicle’s use.
